Ziwaphi is an award-winning general interest top quality bi-weekly (twice a month) tabloid size newspaper with an estimated 20 000 readers per edition.
It specialises in local and regional news coverage, but also offers a comprehensive package of provincial, and national news. Along with news, lifestyle, sports and commentary, the newspaper also features a full compliment of display and classified advertising. Our first edition hit the streets on the 13th April 2007 and ever since, our publication is growing strong with 5 000 editions printed and sold every month.
It is distributed every second Friday of the month. The name Ziwaphi is a colloquial Nguni expression which means “What’s Happening and Where?” – these are the two most important journalistic questions when gathering news.
AWARDS Ziwaphi was judged the winner of South Africa’s 2012 Front Page in the Independent newspaper category at the Annual Sanlam/MDDA Community Media Awards held in May 2013.
Ownership and experience Ziwaphi was started through initial funding from the Media Development and Diversity Agency. In terms of the MDDA Act, Ziwaphi is categorised as the Small Commercial media. As a result, Ziwaphi is 100% owned and controlled by previously disadvantaged individuals. It is composed of a team of professional media collective with experience of more than forty years in the industry.
